Very helpful - Thanks!
Hello Everyone,
My name is Ms. Johnson, I'm from the NYC Department of Education Central Office of Home Schooling. I'm happy to see that there is a way for parents to google this office on the internet. The zip code however is incorrect. The correct zip code is 10001. We can also be reached by phone. Please call Ms. Rothman (manager) at 917-339-1748, Ms. Becoat (assistant) at 917-339-1750 and Ms. Johnson (assistant) at 917-339-1793.
Thank you and be well.
Ms. Johnson
I need a sample of IHIP and quartley report for a 9 grade.
Hi, I am so glad this is here. I guess you can change the wording if you are starting in the middle of the year?
You can certainly change the wording. This is just an example of something quick and easy. You can just change the last part to "remainder of the XXXX-XXXX year" if you'd like and it will be fine.
I now live in NC and I am about to move back to the Newfield, NY area. I started home schooling my children because I HATE the schools here. I plan for my kids to go to school but want to be ready if I feel or have to pull them out. I am using Time4learning.com right now which I will go to if I pull them out in NY. I just wanted to make sure that the letter of intent was the same for all of NY?
I now live in NC and are moving back to Newfield, NY. I am home schooling now because I HATE the schools here and plan to put the kids back in school when we move. However, I want to have all my ducks in a row just in case I have to pull them out of school. So I just wanted to know if the letter of intent was good for all of NY? I am using Time4learning.com and my kids and I love it and we will go back to using it.
Hi Nichole. Yes, the LOI is good for all of NY.
Make sure you adjust the location of addresses. They are incorrect for a formal letter.
No, I am correct. Sender on top, then Recipient. Recipient's address is correct for NYC.
I have a questions in reference to ELA testing. Is it mandatory in NY for homeschooled kids?
Your child is certainly welcome to take the tests (math, ELA) at a public school, but they are not mandatory for homeschooled kids. If your child might be applying to certain middle or high schools in the future, then having ELA and math scores could be helpful.
Hi I wanted to know if anyone has homeschoed a special needs child? Would I need to send in the IEP with the letter of intent? Who do I ask about his services continuing?
Hello. I am sending the LOI now towards the end of Sep. Is that ok or will I have to change something in the letter.
Thank you so much for an AMAZING blog.
Hi Raghad, It's fine to send the LOI now. If you don't get a packet containing various forms, regs, and a metrocard application in the mail within 4 weeks after sending it, mail in your IHIP by the end of October anyway. Congratulations on your decision and have a great year!
Thank you so much Angela. I am new to this whole NY thing and was wondering if anyone can recommend a website where I can get all the information I need. I had no idea we get metro cards :) and I was confused reading a plethora of data between deadlines and what is required! any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
I'm new to this and am wondering If I have to send the letter of intent to the address written on the sample or the address of the public school in my town I'm really not sure of this can anyone help please Thanks!!
Hi new homeschool mom. If you live in NYC, use the address on the sample. If you live elsewhere, then send your LOI to your school superintendent.
Hi. my daughter Just started the year again at her local school. Not happy . what is the first step? Is it ok to just pull her out? how does this work? Irene
Does anyone know if both parents must be represented on and sign the LOI? I have sole legal and physical custody, and well as sole decision making ability in regard to my daughter's education.
Her father might resist a decision to home-school, though he cannot legally prevent it. But he would refuse to sign a LOI if his signature and name were required. Anyone know what if an LOI signed only by the custodial parent is accepted by the NYC Central Office?
Actually, the LOI (or any other the other paperwork) doesn't have to be signed at all. I just prefer to sign it for my own sake. My husband doesn't sign it. If you choose to sign yours, then go ahead, and you don't need any other signatures on it. ~Angela
My 12 yr old suffers from epilepsy and bullying and I'm pulling her out of this horrible school ty so much for the info as I'm new to this,I was going to use an online school to get DVDs and all her books, everything is so expensive but I am scared I won't know the 7 th grade curriculum without the online teachers and NY makes it impossible to homeschool and expensive how does everyone else in NY homeschool? Do you hire tutors for certain subjects? Or use online schooling? I've heard if I don't do this correct I can be a subject of CPS reporting..ty for all the advise and help
Good morning. It is so close to the ending of the school year 2017-2018. My son was supposed to graduate and go to high school but he is failing. An IEP request was sent I'm January but never done. Now I am faced with homeschooling as my only option left. Will I be able to do this despite how late it is in the school year prior to summer vacation?
